President’s Message

We’ve stepped into an exciting new year. 2025 is shaping up to be a year filled with growth, innovation, and meaningful engagement, and I’m thrilled to share just a glimpse of what’s in store for you in this issue of Periospectives.

One of the things I love most about our profession is the dedication and resilience of our members—not just in practice, but in their communities. In our Beyond the Practice feature, Dr. Joan Otomo-Corgel shares her experience navigating the impact of the recent California wildfires, how they’ve affected her practice, and the ways she’s stepping up to help those around her. Her commitment is a hallmark of our profession, and I encourage you to read the inspiring story she shared.

For members whose homes or practices were affected by the wildfires, we are proud to share that the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation (AAPF) is offering disaster relief grants. AAPF provides grants to AAP members who have been affected by disasters and to universities and other organizations associated with periodontics.

Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for an unforgettable Annual Meeting in Toronto! If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to make travel plans. This issue includes everything you need to know about hotels, flights, visa information, and more, so you are well prepared in advance for October. Plus, don’t miss our special Toronto feature, which highlights all the unique experiences the city has to offer while you’re there so you can enjoy Canadian culture, food, and scenery.

This year, we’re taking Periospectives to the next level by going fully digital! This shift allows us to bring you even more dynamic content, including videos, interactive features (which you can see in this article), and deeper dives into the topics that matter most to you.

In this issue, you’ll find the latest information about our Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative and our new Dental Hygiene module called, “The Chronic Disease No One is Talking About.”

In Perio Progress, Dr. Effie Ioannidou shares more about the Academy’s podcast, Probing Perio. This includes the latest episode, “Associations Between Periodontitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis,” discussed by Dr. Jeffrey B. Payne and Dr. Ioannidou herself.

Gen You is back, spotlighting four members at different career stages—each with a unique journey and perspective. With Periospectives fully digital, we can now share videos right here for you to learn more about these individuals directly from the source.

This is just a small glimpse of what’s ahead, and I can’t wait for the year to come and all the memories we will make! Thank you for being a part of this remarkable community. Let’s make 2025 a year of connection, collaboration, growth, and innovation together!

Sincerely,
Dr. Mia L. Geisinger
