President’s Message
I am honored to serve as President of the AAP. The Academy connects periodontal clinicians, educators, and residents across the country and the world, and I look forward to strengthening that connection and lifting the periodontists’ voice within the greater dental professional community.
Thank you to all our members and attendees for a successful 2024 Annual Meeting in San Diego! Together we are stronger, and I thank you for continuing to support and uplift your peers and this specialty. You can see a recap of the 2024 Annual Meeting here: am2024.perio.org
As an educator, I take great pride in seeing what our periodontal residents are working toward and the achievements they are making. The young talent displayed at the Balint Orban Memorial Competition and Research Forum Poster Competition demonstrated that the future of periodontology is indeed bright. I look forward to helping the next generation of specialists transition from the classroom to the practice with our inaugural ARRive program, which was announced at the meeting.
As you all know, the Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative was launched at last year’s Annual Meeting in Austin. Over the past year, AAP staff have been incredibly hard at work to make this initiative productive and worthwhile. It consists of two components: the Dental Hygiene Study Club for members and the Dental Hygiene Recognition Program for dental hygienists. At this year’s Annual Meeting, AAP staff answered questions about the initiative and let attendees know that new Dental Hygiene Study Club modules would be coming out very soon. I am proud to announce that two new Dental Hygiene Study Club modules, including, “Smoking, Vaping, Cannabis Use and Oral Health,” are now available.
Throughout 2024, Dr. Meraw released President’s Messages to inform our members about what the Academy is doing for them. As I would love to stay connected with our members and keep everybody up to date with Academy initiatives and happenings, I intend to continue the President’s Messages throughout my term.
There is a lot to look forward to in 2025, and this is just the beginning. I can’t wait for all that is to come throughout the upcoming year, and I hope that you are just as excited as I am to explore innovative scientific discovery, improved mechanisms for patient care, and working to continue to build the community in our profession in the year to come.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mia L. Geisinger
