President’s Message

As I reflect upon my term as AAP President, I am immensely grateful for the opportunity given to me by our members to learn, grow, and better connect with my fellow AAP community. Although the season is changing and my term is ending, I am proud of all that we have achieved. I’m also proud to have been able to make a difference within the Academy and our profession, and I’m looking forward to gathering with my peers at the upcoming AAP Annual Meeting in San Diego.

This past year, I have spent time meeting with various periodontal committees and societies. You can hear more about what has come out of these meetings in my Monthly President’s Messages, which are available on the Academy’s YouTube channel. We began 2024 by organizing for the year ahead. Our Meetings department gathered volumes of data from the 109th AAP Annual Meeting in Austin and spent time evaluating the data and comments from attendees so that the best choices were made in preparation for the 110th Annual Meeting in San Diego.

The 110th AAP Annual Meeting, taking place Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in sunny San Diego, is the largest conference in North America dedicated exclusively to periodontology. What does this mean for you? This meeting is the hub to connect with like-minded individuals and discover the latest in the field of periodontology. It is the place to ask questions, share your experiences, and learn from others’ experiences. With a variety of sessions (with some Halloween-themed ones, of course), the Academy has thought of everything for everyone. This year, we have the Dental Hygiene Symposium taking place on Saturday, Nov. 2, in-person Dental and Medical Coding Workshops as well as an Insurance Panel for best practices on submitting claims, the Educator Symposium, Lunch and Learns and Speaker Studio in the Exhibit Hall, the Corporate Forum, a hands-on workshop, sedation courses, the Robert J. Genco Symposium, and so much more. We want you to be at your best, alert and happy, so coffee breaks and an ice cream social will be available in the Exhibit Hall this year. I am also eagerly anticipating our Balint Orban Memorial Competition and Research Forum Poster Competition to see what our young protégés have in store for us this year. Additionally, you can learn more about your Academy and make sure your voice is heard at the District Forums, which provide a platform for members to learn about AAP initiatives and share thoughts with their District Trustees.

One of the most important parts of the Annual Meeting is collaboration—collaboration with one another as dental experts, and collaboration with outside organizations, societies, and companies. We are grateful to welcome back our colleagues from the Japanese Academy of Clinical Periodontology (JACP), the Japanese Society of Periodontology (JSP), and the Osteology Foundation. Global collaboration is key to long-term success, and you can learn more about the Academy’s history with the JACP, JSP, and the Osteology Foundation in our International Periodontics article. The Academy is proud to collaborate with the AAP Foundation for our fun variety of events at the Annual Meeting, including the AAP Foundation Booth, Silent Auction, Estate Planning Breakfast, and the AAP Foundation’s Future Horizons in Periodontology. We would also like to thank our corporate sponsors who you can find at the Corporate Forum and within the Exhibit Hall.

Once again, I would like to express my utmost gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the AAP President and represent our organization and specialty. It has truly been an honor. I look forward to seeing you all in San Diego!

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Meraw
