Beyond the Practice: The Importance of Continuing Education
As periodontists, there are days when we may feel limited by the walls of our practices. Although it is important to give it the attention it needs—dealing with complex cases, building relationships with our patients, and making sure these patients receive our highest level of care—remaining solely within the practice can limit both professional growth and the quality of care we provide. Peer-to-peer education ensures that we are growing as individuals professionally while also staying up to date on the latest techniques, technologies, and research. It also combats the isolation that sometimes comes with a demanding profession.
The Academy asked two members of the Continuing Education Oversight Committee (CEOC) – Dr. Sejal Thacker and Dr. Caitlin Darcey – some questions about the importance of continuing education and peer-to-peer learning, as well as what made them join the CEOC.
What inspired you to become a part of the Continuing Education Oversight Committee?
When we initially joined the CEOC, our primary motivation was to give back to an organization that has profoundly impacted our life, providing not only a sense of community and belonging but also invaluable education. We felt we could contribute to this committee given our experience as Program Directors, clinical researchers, and private practitioners. It aligned perfectly with what the committee was seeking.
However, as we became more engaged with the CEOC, our goals evolved. Being part of the CEOC became much more than a means of contributing to the community. It became an opportunity to advance knowledge, raise awareness about our specialty, promote innovation, and enhance patient outcomes. We also valued the dynamic, energetic environment of the group, united in our focus on supporting our membership and exploring ways to better serve their needs.
Why is it important for periodontists to engage in continuing education outside of their daily practice?
Continuing education is crucial for professionals, especially in specialized fields like periodontics, where the landscape is constantly evolving. By stepping outside your everyday bubble and engaging in continuing education, you expose yourself to the latest techniques, technologies, and research. This not only helps you stay at the forefront of your field but also introduces you to innovative approaches that can enhance patient care.
Moreover, continuing education provides a platform for networking with peers and experts, fostering collaborations that can lead to new ideas and solutions to complex clinical challenges. It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself, push the boundaries of your current knowledge, and gain fresh perspectives that can revitalize your practice.
How do you think stepping outside of the practice setting and engaging with peers influences the overall quality of periodontal care?
As mentioned earlier, stepping outside of our routine practice allows us to engage with the latest innovations, evidence-based research, and clinical advancements. This exposure directly enhances our ability to deliver optimal periodontal care. Ultimately, our primary focus is the well-being of our patients, and by continually expanding our knowledge and skills, we empower ourselves to manage patient care more effectively. Embracing opportunities for growth outside our comfort zone ensures that we remain at the forefront of our field, providing the highest standard of care.
What strategies does the CEOC use to ensure that educational programs foster meaningful content, connections, and exchanges among participants?
The CEOC has always prioritized delivering the highest quality experiences to its members. To meet the evolving needs and expectations of our membership—who seek to remain current, innovative, and creative—the CEOC meticulously reviews audience surveys, speaker evaluations, and member recommendations. This valuable feedback is then consolidated and enhanced through insights from key opinion leaders, shaping the goals and objectives of our upcoming meetings and webinars. We then infuse these plans with our creative touches, carefully curating diverse topics and tracks that align with our goals. This approach results in a unique, engaging, well-balanced, and inclusive program that truly resonates with our members.
What advice would you give to new periodontists about the importance of continuing education?
To new periodontists, we urge you to get out there, attend continuing education events, and connect with others—this will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Our organization and our specialty are truly invaluable, bound together by a shared passion for periodontics. This passion is contagious, and when you immerse yourself in it, you’ll feel the energy and be inspired. It’s a powerful cycle—one that, in time, will allow you to inspire the next generation of periodontists.
